Comrades Marathon Association shares best spectator spots to catch the action

Spectators will no doubt be gearing up to cheer runners along their journey to the finish line.

WITH less than a week to Comrades race day on Sunday, June 9, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has shared a list of prime spectator spots along the route to catch the action to cheer on athletes.

Known as ‘The Ultimate Human Race’, the Comrades Marathon is the world’s oldest and largest ultramarathon.

A little over 20 000 runners will tackle the challenging 85.91km course from the Durban City Hall to the Hollywoodbets Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg to year.

As spectators will no doubt be gearing up to cheer runners along their journey to the finish line, here are some great spots to cheer on runners.

Locations:

Pinetown: St. Johns Ave (race distance: 20km) – the first runner is expected around 06:45.  Click here to find the spot on Google Maps.
Hillcrest: Intersection R103 / Shongweni Road (race distance: 31km) – the first runner is expected around 07:26. Click here to find the spot on Google Maps.

Intersection R103 / Kassier Road (race distance: 34km)
Alverstone: Intersection R103 / Alverstone Road (race distance: 40km) – the first runner is expected around 07:58. Click here to find the spot on Google Maps.

The CMA has also urged spectators not to stop at, or make use of, the Umlaas Road intersection and overpass on race day due to this remaining an active construction site with no available parking.

Spectators and supporters are encouraged to arrive early and to park well off the road and out of the way of both traffic and race participants.
