Residents support charitable cause at Grace Family Church uMhlanga

Grace Family Church partnered with the Denis Hurley Centre this year to host the Street Store event which caters for the homeless.

THERE was an outpouring of generosity at Grace Family Church’s uMhlanga Campus on Saturday as volunteers showed up in their numbers for the church’s sorting day initiative.

The sorting day formed part of the outreach programme for the Street Store which helps hundreds of homeless people to have a dignified shopping experience.

In order to bring the project to fruition, Grace Family Church has partnered with the Denis Hurley Centre to host the Street Store event.

For the last few weeks, the uMhlanga church campus has been home to a shipping container filled with shoes, clothing and other items donated by the community for the less fortunate.

On Saturday, however, volunteers showed up in their numbers for the sorting day initiative where items were sorted into various categories and boxed.

A total of 120 boxes filled with clothes, footwear and toys for the homeless in Durban were sorted.

Dave Richter, the director of Grace Aid, the charitable arm of the church, said he was blown away by the support.

“This year’s response has been much better than all the previous years. There has been an overflow of generosity, and it has been fantastic to see people open their hearts to give. Our sorting day is also a day when we need volunteers, and we had 92 people join us on the day and give up their time to help out.

“This required people power, and we are so grateful to everyone who gave back. The Street Store is not only about the donation of clothes and shoes, but on the day, the homeless are given warm meals, a haircut and foot-washing. The Street Store is one way in which we are able to give back in a meaningful way, and we hope the generosity continues in the years to come,” he said.

Richter said the church had various outreach programmes lined up throughout the year.
