Grace Family Church in uMhlanga calls for volunteers for sorting day

The sorting day is in aid of the Street Store initiative which helps hundreds of homeless people have a dignified shopping experience.

GRACE Family Church uMhlanga is urging residents to support them this Saturday, June 1, for their annual sorting day for the Street Store initiative.

The Street Store helps hundreds of homeless people have a dignified shopping experience, and the church has partnered with the Denis Hurley Centre to host the event on June 8.

Currently, the uMhlanga campus of the church is home to a shipping container where people have been donating items for the drive.

The sorting day sees members from the church as well as local residents pack hundreds of boxes of clothes, footwear and toys for the homeless in Durban.

Dave Richter, a member of Grace Aid, the charitable arm of the church, said everyone is welcome to support on the sorting day.

“We have, for the past nine years given back and partnered with various role-players, including the Denis Hurley Centre, and while there has been a lovely response of people donating to the cause [in the past], we now hope for similar support for this weekend’s sorting day. On the day, we sort through the items and then box them up for display.

“We welcome anyone from the community to come volunteer and help to sort clothes into sizes and box them. This is about giving back, but also, it is a lot of fun for the whole family. You can give as much time as you want, and as the saying goes, ‘Many hands make light work’. The task is to get the clothes all sorted and boxed so they are ready for the Street Store at the Denis Hurley Centre,” he said.

The sorting day takes place on Saturday, June 1, between 07:30 and 12:00, and is open to anyone.
