Durban North CPF ensures smooth start to Election Day

Members of the CPF will not only be patrolling the area but will also be visiting voting stations to ensure the safety of residents.

IT has been a smooth start to Election Day in the four wards in the north Durban area with people queuing to make their mark in the National and Provincial Elections.

Ensuring Election Day will be a peaceful one is the Durban North Community Policing Forum (CPF), which will keep a close eye on wards 35, 36, 110 and 58.

In the last few days leading up to the elections, fake news has abounded over protest action, disruptions and even the lack of pens available for voters to use.

Chairman of the Durban North CPF Haden Searles said his members will back up police and also patrol on the day.

“Our primary role will be to visit the polling stations to check up on our members and patrol the area around the voting stations to ensure no suspicious activity has occurred. We are there to back up the SAPS. We remain on high alert and on standby to prevent any incidents of disruptive behaviour. The CPF has a concise and detailed plan that includes the SAPS and security partners,” he said.

Searles said a number of the CPF had applied for special votes over Monday and Tuesday (May 27 and 28) which freed them up to support the SAPS.

His comments were echoed by Darryl Oliver, Durban North CPF public relations officer.

“For any serious crimes, we urged the community to call 10111 as one of their first ports of call and also alert their security companies or CPF. There has been a proliferation of fake news of late, and we ask residents to rely on information from their respective ward councillors and the CPF,” he said.
