Chartwell Drive sinkhole repairs underway

Work has also commenced on Marine Drive where there was damage to the sewerage line due to the collapse of a stormwater drain.

REPAIRS to the sinkhole that formed on Chartwell Drive in front of the Spring Glade complex, following the heavy rain in January, have finally begun.

According to Ward 35 councillor Nicole Bollman, the final approvals of the Section 36 applications were made on February 21, and work commenced a few days later.

The hole formed after the heavy rains on January 13. The stormwater drain failed, and it resulted in a sinkhole developing.

At that stage, the depression was substantial, but after more heavy rain fell on January 17, the sinkhole enlarged, causing the entire section of road in front of the complex to collapse, including part of the opposite bank.

The complex was the talk of the town since, with locals even stopping by to see the massive depression and taking photos of it.

“The contract for the repair of Chartwell Drive was awarded to DEVRU Construction. This reputable company played a crucial role in the successful repair of the M4 after the 2019 floods and contributed to the recovery efforts in uMdloti following the 2022 floods,” she said.

She added that work had also commenced on Marine Drive where there was damage to the sewerage line – a stormwater drain had also collapsed.

The other street where repairs were needed for the infrastructure was Clinch Crescent where a sinkhole had formed near the public park.

“The road was cordoned off for some time. Although no contractor needed to be assigned, a budget was needed which became available,” added Bollman.
