Planned shutdown of Northern Aqueduct postponed

The shutdown has been postponed until further notice.

THE eThekwini Municipality said it plans to shut down the Northern Aqueduct pipeline as part of its efforts to restore water supply to areas that have been experiencing prolonged water outages.

Several areas north of Durban have had no or intermittent water supply for the past few months, which has led to growing frustration.

Last week, City manager Musa Mbhele confirmed that the municipality had to replace 54 defective air valves along the aqueduct with a further six requiring special modifications.

The initial shutdown was set for 24 hours from 17:00 on Tuesday, February 20 to 17:00 on Wednesday, February 21.

“Residents and businesses are informed that the planned shutdown of the Northern Aqueduct Pipeline that was scheduled to commence on Tuesday, February 20 has been postponed until further notice. This comes after extensive assessments were conducted by the City’s Water and Sanitation technical teams,” the statement read.

The City added that a new date for the planned shutdown will be communicated.

“We urge the community to continue using water sparingly. The municipality apologises for the inconvenience caused.”
