Paddler shares his Dusi memories

Wessel Cronje says he likes that the Dusi challenges his endurance and physical and technical skills.

A PADDLER who will complete his 17th Dusi Canoe Marathon this week is looking forward to experiencing every aspect of the race.

Speaking to Northglen News, Wessel Cronje said he and his K2 partner, Trevor Kieck, of uMhlanga, are ready and eager to participate.

Originally from the Cape, Cronje came to Durban 17 years ago to participate in the event. He has also completed the Comrades Marathon 13 times.

“It’s my K2 partner’s 30th Dusi, and I am excited to be a part of it, but it’s also a tribute to my late son, Dawid, whom I had the honour of completing three Dusis with before he passed on in 2021. I miss him every day, and I plan on honouring his legacy at every Dusi event,” said Cronje.

“There’s a link between road running and paddling, and it has to do with portaging. It’s exciting and adventurous at the same time. I love taking in all the nature that I encounter during the race, especially when we get to the Valley of 1000 Hills. That’s my favourite spot,” he said.

Cronje also said he liked the fact that the Dusi was a technical, physical and endurance challenge, which required skill, determination and quick thinking.

“Anything can happen during the race, and anything can change. That’s the best part of it,” he said.

Cronje said he has had various K2 partners over the years, the youngest being his 16-year-old son and the eldest being 70 years old, and no two races have ever been the same, but each one was packed with special memories.

He advised anyone wanting to begin paddling or signing up for their first Dusi to just start.

“Don’t procrastinate. The Dusi is a great challenge, and paddling is interesting and challenging – so just start,” he said.
