DSG fall at the final hurdle

Sunrisers Eastern Cape completed back-to-back title success in the SA20.

DURBAN’S Super Giants lost the final of this year’s Betway SA20 to the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, who claimed their second consecutive title at Newlands on Saturday.

The Sunrisers, won the toss, decided to bat first, it was a decision that paid dividends as Tom Abell, Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs laid into the Durban franchise.

Abell and Stubbs both scored half-centuries, helping the Sunrisers post 204/3 in their 20 overs.

It was a bad start for DSG when they lost Quinton de Kock early for three, and that trend continued as they lost regular wickets, slumping to 6/69 in just the 11th over.

Dwaine Pretorius fought for his 28 before he guided one the short third man [not sure what you mean here???] with the score on 100.

The final two wickets fell in the 17th over as DSG were bowled out for 115.

The final wicket saw the Sunrisers beat the Super Giants by 89 runs and win a second consecutive Betway SA20 title.

The Durban’s Super Giants superstar was named Betway SA20 Player of the Season and Batter of the Season for 2024 on Saturday evening at Newlands.

While it was not to be for the men from Durban, they’ll take heart that they ended the 2023 season of the SA20 in fifth place in the table.

They can also celebrate the fact that Protea batsman and DSG’s top scorer, Heinrich Klaasen, was named Betway SA20 Player of the Season and Batter of the Season for 2024.

Although Klaasen was unable to power DSG to their maiden Betway SA20 championship, the 32-year-old was pleased with the team’s overall performance.

“It’s nice to perform, but it’s only worth it when your team gets over the line; otherwise, the performance means nothing to me. It is a little bit disappointing, but there are more important things in life than winning trophies. It has been a good tournament – our guys played fantastically – but the better team won on the day,” he said.

“The boys have been fantastic, together with the coaches and supporting staff – it’s a thankless job. We can’t ask for a better tournament in South Africa. The SA20 is up there with the world’s best.”
