Woman dies in Durban North accident

The cause of the collision remains unknown and will be investigated by SAPS.

ONE person died and another is in serious condition following a motor vehicle accident near Broadway earlier today.

Emer-G-Med paramedics spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said the incident occurred on the M4 Ruth First Highway north bound near the Waterkant Road bridge.

“Paramedics were met with mayhem as the remains of an SUV lay on its roof occupying the right hand lane, whilst a Renault Clio lay in ruins on the left shoulder of the roadway,” he said.

The driver of the SUV sustained serious injuries.

Using a triage system, paramedics attended to a woman in her thirties who was in a critical condition at the time.

” Paramedics treated and stabilised the woman on scene using numerous advanced life support intervention methods with the assistance Netcare911, before she was cut free by Ethekwini Fire and Rescue Services. Once free she was placed onto a mechanical ventilator to assist her with breathing and transported rapidly by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further care,” he added.

The woman unfortunately succumbed to her injuries and died later this evening in hospital.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson, said the second driver, a male in his twenties had also sustained serious injuries.

“He was stabilised on scene by advanced life support paramedics before being rushed to a nearby Hospital for the care he required.The entire Noth bound carriageway was closed whilst emergency personal worked on the scene,” he added.
