Plans to repair damaged North Coast Road service station
Ward 34 councillor Bobby Maharajh said the project is a much-needed one.
PLANS are afoot to repair and reinstate a Total Energies Avoca filling station on Chris Hani Road (North Coast Road).
The service station was damaged in the April 2022 floods. The forecourt of the station was affected, as well as the edge of the property, which was affected by a washaway on the banks of the Seekoespruit River.
The convenience store inside the service station was also affected by the flooding.
Ward 34 councillor Bobby Maharajh has welcomed the project which will take close to a year to complete.
“Total intends to construct a retaining wall on the banks of the river where the partial collapse of the forecourt occurred. They also intend to repair stormwater drains, install new pipes in their existing filling station and unblock drains affected by the floods. There are also plans to renovate the convenience store. I have been in contact with the environmental consultants about this project for a little more than a month now, and they’ve detailed their plans to repair and get the service station up and running again. They also assured me they’ve considered mitigating measures for any issues that may arise. I welcome the move because the repairs to the service station are long overdue. The project is absolutely necessary,” he said.

The project to repair has to now go through a public participation process because it has to follow the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) regulations.
Mitrance Nana, an environmental consultant for Margard Group Pty Ltd, appointed by Total Energies, encouraged residents and interested and affected parties to email any concerns or queries they have on the project.
“We want to give stakeholders an opportunity to raise issues of concern, comments or suggestions regarding the proposed project and ensure everyone is informed about the project. This is why we have opened the public participation process to make the community aware of the project,” she said.
