Locals encouraged to use e-waste bin in uMhlanga

The e-waste bin is available to residents and locals to dispose of their small appliances and devices that are no longer in use.

UMHLANGA now has an e-waste bin for residents and business owners to dispose of their devices and small appliances safely and responsibly.

The initiative was made possible by Umhlanga Tourism with the full support of the Umhlanga UIP who monitors the bin and contacts the service provider once it is full.

The bin was installed next to the UIP offices on the Village Green last Tuesday and is a free service available to anyone to discard of their e-waste.

Speaking about the initiative, Umhlanga Tourism chairperson Jeanie Sarno said everyone has a role to play in society.

“If we continue to do the same mistakes that have been done in the past, then we continue to head for failure. Residents and businesses discard these items on a daily basis, more so now with load-shedding. Up until now, there hasn’t been an easy way to discard of these broken items properly, and the majority of us have thrown them in the municipal bins, and the e-waste only ends up in landfills,” she said.

“The bin is centrally located on the Village Green where the UIP offices are, next to the old red postbox. The UIP have been very supportive to offer to check the bin and when it’s full, to call PSixteen,” said Sarno.

She recommends dropping off items early in the morning or early afternoon when the area is a little less busy as ongoing construction is causing traffic congestion.

The list of devices that can be dropped off range from laptops, computer keyboards, chargers, cables, batteries, printer cartridges and other smaller electrical appliances, such as irons, kettles, hairdryers, blenders, cellphones, food processors and hair-trimmers.

For larger items, such as fridges, stoves, dishwashers and washing machines, locals can contact PSixteen 3 Eco-Cycle directly for assistance via WhatApp at 065 6822621 or call 086 199 5017. You can also send an email to info@psixteen3.com.

“uMhlanga is a wonderful place to reside in as the community always works together for the better of the residents, and in turn, that works for tourism or vice versa. If we up it for the tourism industry, then it’s a plus for the residents like myself. There is always positive feedback from our residents and business, and it would not make sense if they do not take advantage of this free service,” said Sarno.
