KZN ready for the launch of new vehicle licence-numbering system

Motorists will be given 21 months, starting from March 1, 2024, to voluntary migrate to the new system. After that, it will be mandatory.

FOLLOWING the recent implementation of the new provincial vehicle licence-numbering system, the KwaZulu-Natal government says it is ready for the launch of the new system.

The Provincial Transport Department confirmed in a statement that it has tested the ENATIS system, and the system is now able to activate the new numbering system, supported by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).

“As part of the process, the final gazette is expected to be published on November 30, 2023, which has incorporated inputs and views from various stakeholders and the public since the issuing of the first gazette early in November 2023. The operationalisation and commencement of the new numbering system is following a number of consultations with various stakeholders, including RTMC, SABS and manufacturers of blank number plates,” said the department.

The department stated that it is confident with the state of readiness for the launch of the licence-numbering system for the province, which will commence on December 1, 2023. “As of tomorrow, November 28, the Provincial Motor Licensing Bureaus (MLBs) and RTI will be workshopped on changes brought about by the system and its requirements,” the department said.

It added, “Registering authorities in the province shall also be provided with ongoing support to ensure that the implementation has limited challenges, if any at all. The first phase of the new numbering will cater for the registration of new motor vehicles, re-registration of vehicles to new owners, stolen vehicles that are recovered and re-licensed in the owner’s name and government vehicles. The first phase will commence on December 1 and continue until February 28, 2024.”

With an aim of catering for all vehicle owners to migrate from the current system to a new system, the department revealed that the second phase will commence on March 1, 2024. Throughout the 24-month implementation period, motorists will be given 21 months, starting from March 1, 2024, to voluntarily migrate to the new system. After that, it will be mandatory. The new number plate will not depict the towns and demarcation, but it will instead have a continuous numbering system. The security features will also assist in the fight against crime,” said the department.

It alluded that the changes to the new licence-numbering system are prompted by the fact that some of the towns have run out of numbers. To find more updates about the new licence-numbering system, you can follow the departmental social media pages.
