Durban North SAPS welcomes new communications officer

Sergeant Nonhlanhla Shozi takes over the role from Captain Raymond Deokaran who retired in May this year.

SERGEANT Nonhlanhla Shozi has been named the new spokesperson for the Durban North Police Station.

Shozi, who has been a member of the South African Police Service (SAPS) since 2005, took over the role from Captain Raymond Deokaran who retired in May this year.

“My 18-year journey with the SAPS began in 2005 as a trainee constable in Howick. I remember the date well because I was so excited – it was January 10. I completed my six months of field training before being placed at the Rietvlei SAPS station. In 2007, I was lucky enough to get a transfer to the Durban North Police Station.

“I’m honoured to take over the role and hope I can do it justice. I’ve worked in the social crime-prevention role for the last few years, working with the youth and raising awareness on various issues, including bullying and drugs. I know this area well and have a wonderful relationship with the community. I hope to continue that going forward,” she said.

Asked about her role going forward, Shozi said it was three-fold.

“I feel my job is to let the community know about criminal trends, to work with the community to raise awareness on issues as well as highlight the good work of our members who work tirelessly to protect our community,” she said.

While there were no specific crimes on the increase in the area, Shozi warned residents about online purchase scams.

“Many residents are falling victim to people falsely advertising. We have seen more cases of online fraud in the last few years, and it is concerning. We are urging residents and members of the public to do their homework when selling or purchasing items online,” she said.
