WATCH: Snakes of the 031: The Brown House Snake

We start off our brand new series with the non-venomous Brown House Snake.

CAXTON Local Media has partnered with snake rescuer Nick Evans for a series of called ‘Snakes of the 031’.

In this series Nick will be introducing the most common snakes of Durban.

We start off with the non-venomous Brown House Snake. The snake constricts its prey and feeds mainly on rodents and lizards.

“Brown House Snakes are one of the best snakes you can have in the garden. They are non-venomous and are excellent for rodent control. They are nocturnal and are powerful constrictors. They often target lizards, rodents and birds and constrict their prey, relying on their muscle power.

“They are very common in Durban; in fact, they are one of the most common species. Their favourite places to hide are under swimming pool pumps, piles of wood or any suitable cover. They can be found in various shades of brown, depending on their age. They are called house snakes because they are often found in or near houses,” he said.

Evans urged residents, should they see any snake, to contact a professional rather than approaching the snake themselves.

“The best thing to do is monitor the snake and call in a professional,” he said.
