Imvula games in Durban North was a hit

The games are open to anyone living with a disability in the greater Durban area and attract people from all age groups.

IT was fun and games for residents living at North Bay Lodge who took part in the second Imvula Games recently held at Golden Hours School.

The lodge accommodates adults living with mental and intellectual disabilities who require specialised care. For some, it has been home for over 30 years.

Speaking to Northglen News, Sharmaine Singh, manager of the facility, said the Imvula Games were implemented two years ago by movement therapist Paula van Eerden, who specifically designed games for those with restricted movement.

“There are other events similar to the Imvula Games but not with activities tailor-made for individuals with mental disabilities. The majority of our residents’ lives are within the boundaries of this facility due to the nature of their conditions, so the Imvula Games is something they really look forward to,” she said.

“We had 23 residents taking part. Some were reluctant at first, but when the event was over, they were so happy they did take part. It is wonderful to have an event with activities that are suited to the participants’ specific capabilities,” said Singh.

One of the residents, Carolyn Seery, said she was excited for the games as she loved jogging and keeping fit.

“I am very active. I jog around the premises, and I love yoga. I took part in goal scoring, hoola hoops, relay, ball javelin and running. It was so exciting and taught me teamwork, patience and discipline,” she said.

Seery added that she loved the sense of achievement she felt when she received her medal.

Pharozia Fynn, who has been living at North Bay Lodge for 11 years, and generally uses her spare time to knit, says she was glad that she decided to give the Imvula Games a try.

“It was such an enjoyable experience. I played Pass the Ball, and I am really looking forward to taking part in the next one,” said Fynn.

Natalie Carison took part in disc throwing, soccer through the hoops and goal scoring and said she had a magnificent time.

“It was a good experience for me and something that I really enjoyed doing,” she said.

Ivor Torino was thrilled to have received a medal after taking part in hoola hoops, disc throwing and the tag race.
