North Durban Lions Club spread festive cheer with cakes

Avril Hobbs from the club said the sale of the Christmas Cakes was raising funds for its service projects.

THE North Durban Lions Club are gearing up for the festive season with their annual tradition of selling Christmas cakes, as part of their annual fundraising initiatives to fund their community work.

Since 1975, Lions clubs throughout the country have sold Lions Christmas Cakes to raise funds to finance projects in their communities.

This tradition has continued to this day for the local club who are also selling the cakes in an effort to give back to the projects they’ve invested in.

Avril Hobbs from the club said the sale of the Christmas Cakes was not only a way to raise awareness about the organisation, it was also about putting community service at the heart of what they do.

“We’ve now been doing this for close to 50 years. The delicious 1kg cakes are already in a box and contain no alcohol. The cakes happen to be made in Durban, but they’re shipped throughout the country. There is no alcohol in the cake, but many people opt to add their own alcohol to the cakes. You can buy a cake and keep it in your cupboard until Christmas. People can either buy the cakes individually or in a case of 12. We really hope residents will support our initiative and get in touch as the funds from the sales of the cakes are used in our service projects,” she said.

The club also runs a monthly food parcels initiative as well as a diabetes awareness campaign.

The cakes, which cost R160, will be sold through the North Durban Lions website and Facebook page.
