Durban North Police Station welcomes new Vispol commander

In September this year, Lt Colonel Pam Nair was appointed as the Visible Policing (Vispol) commander of Durban North SAPS.

WITH more than three decades of service to the South African Police Service (SAPS) in various crime-fighting roles, Lieutenant Colonel Pam Nair has always put service above self.

Nair has served the community in various roles, including the tactical commander of the SAPS Provincial Task Team, and she was a member of the SAPS Flying Squad for 21 years.

In 2011, she was promoted to the head of Crime Prevention at the Durban North Police Station.

It’s a role she is relishing and one she hopes to use to give back to the community.

“I’m looking forward to my new role and fostering a stronger bond between the community, the CPFs, security companies and neighbourhood watches. I’m honoured to have been chosen as the Vispol commander. As someone who has worked at the station for a long time, since 2011 actually, I have an excellent working relationship with all the role-players and the community itself.

“As Vispol commander, it is my duty to oversee every aspect of visible policing, as well as operational planning. A big part of that is liaising with our Trio Crimes Unit and Crime Prevention Unit in our crime-fighting initiatives. At the core of this role is servicing our community, which is why we have an open-door policy at the station,” she said.

She also thanked the members of the station and community who wished her well on her new appointment.

Speaking on her choice of SAPS as a career, Nair said she was influenced by many of her family members.

“A contributing role was that the majority of my family members are members of the SAPS and Correctional Services. I saw the pride with which they wore the uniform to help those in need, and that played a role in my choice for the police service,” she said.

Aside from community service, another of Nair’s passions is the fine arts and sports.

She specialises in still life and portrait painting and has represented SAPS at a provincial and national level in volleyball.
