Wanted suspect killed in shoot-out near uMdloti

The suspect opened fire on security officers and was fatally wounded in the shootout.

A SUSPECT linked to various crimes was fatally wounded in a shoot-out on Tuesday with members of Marshall Security’s Special Operation Team in uMdloti.

Members of the company were first alerted to the suspect’s presence after a security officer from the company spotted his vehicle parked on the M27.

According to the company’s spokesperson, Tyron Powell, the driver of the vehicle was identified as a suspect in a hijacking incident from September 26 this year, also in uMdloti.

“As our Special Operation Team approached, the suspect became confrontational, and a scuffle ensued, whereby the suspect produced a firearm and fired shots towards our members. Our team members, in self-defence, retaliated and returned fire, and the suspect was fatally wounded. One of our team members sustained minor injuries during the incident but refused further hospital treatment,” he said.

Powell added that Durban North SAPS secured the crime scene, and paramedics from Netcare 911 declared the suspect deceased.

“Further investigations revealed that the firearm in the suspect’s possession was reported stolen in August this year in the oThongathi area. The suspect has also been linked to multiple serious and violent crimes within the greater Durban area,” Powell said.
