Poppy Day collections in Durban North a success

The Saturday closest to Remembrance Day lends itself to Poppy Day when poppies are sold to the public to raise funds to assist in welfare work among military veterans. The poppy is an international symbol for peace.

THE South African Legion Durban Branch held a successful Poppy Day collection at the La Lucia Mall on Saturday.

The day is more commonly known as Remembrance Day where the fallen heroes of both world wars are honoured and is held on November 11 every year.

Rick Andriés, vice-chairman of SA Legions Durban Branch, said collections went extremely well and a total of 80 tins circulated around several areas in north Durban.

“People were very generous with their donations, and I would like to thank all who supported, including our volunteers. When you buy a poppy on Poppy Day, you pay tribute to those who died, and you are helping those who are left and bear the scars of war,” he said.

There were 18 volunteers at La Lucia Mall, some of whom were scholars from Our Lady of Fatima School who assisted at various collection points across the mall.
