Once a month, Berea Mail, Highway Mail and Northglen News will be promoting markets in their area as a way of showcasing some of these markets and showing how you can support your community by buying local.

IN recent years, the Umhlanga Farmer’s Market has grown from strength to strength since its launch in 1984.

The weekly market has attracted hundreds of residents and visitors looking for a variety of items including fresh food and vegetables.

On Saturday, history was made as the owners of the market launched the Umhlanga Farmer’s Market Weekend Edition.

According to Ethel Currie, one of the co-owners of the market, the weekend edition was in an effort to grow the following for local entrepreneurs and give locals a chance to attend the market.

“So many people have reached out to us and have asked me tirelessly about starting up a weekend edition. So many people are working during the week and aren’t able to attend the Wednesday market. I’ve been putting off the decision for so long as it is a big endeavour. It’s a bigger market than our weekly market with more food offerings. One of the other co-owners and stallholders, Nish-Moodley Fakir, was also instrumental in getting me to launch the weekend edition,” she said.

Currie said her hope is for word to spread on the weekend market.

“Going forward, we will be hosting a weekly weekend market from 10:00 until 15:00. We had such a phenomenal response, and we are so grateful to everyone who supported us at our launch. The whole philosophy behind a farmer’s market is to have somewhere you can buy fresh bread, cheese, meat and veggies. We feel our market has a well-curated balance of farmers’ produce/wholefoods as well as unique crafts and food on the go,” she said.

The market takes place on Autumn Drive, Prestondale.
