Thousands march in solidarity with Palestine in uMhlanga

The march was organised by the United for Palestine coalition group.

MORE than 2000 Durbanites took to the streets around uMhlanga on Saturday in support of the people of Palestine and a call for a ceasefire as the deadly conflict between Israel and Hamas continues.

Protesters described the attacks on Palestinians as genocide while chants of ‘free, free Palestine’ rang out as the death toll continues to climb in the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

More than 4 200 Palestinians (both in the West Bank and Gaza) have been killed while more than 1 300 Israelis were killed in the October 7 attacks by Hamas.

The march, which was organised by the United for Palestine coalition group, also called for a humanitarian aid corridor to be established, ensuring essential support reaches those in need.

“We implore our government and political parties to align with us in our quest to end the apartheid imposed by Zionist Israel and support the people of Palestine, just as they stood with us during the struggle for freedom in South Africa,” said one of the organisers, Abdul Valodia.

Members of the ANC were also present to show their solidarity for Palestinians.

According to the United Nations, at least 30% of all housing units in the Gaza Strip have been either destroyed, rendered uninhabitable or damaged.

Meanwhile, International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Dr Naledi Pandor, has called for an immediate end to hostilities and the unconditional provision of medical supplies and humanitarian aid.

“The carnage and senseless destruction of property, as well as the untold pain and suffering, should be condemned unreservedly. These events remind us of our own suffering at the hands of apartheid machinery,” Pandor said.
