Durban North autism school to hold breast cancer awareness day

The day is held in honour of a close friend who died of breast cancer.

IT’S been eight years since an autism school in Durban North started honouring Chantelle Prince every October – also a Durban North resident – who lost her battle with breast cancer.

To remember the legacy Prince left behind, and to teach learners at the school about cancer and health issues, Sheraine Reddy-Subraya and her partner, Yugen Subraya, choose a Friday each October where everything at the school becomes pink and lessons revolve around taking care of the body.

Speaking to Northglen News, Reddy-Subraya said the whole community is invited to join in by wearing pink and spreading awareness about breast cancer at home, school, work and wherever they go on the day.

“This year, the Chantelle Prince Breast Cancer Awareness Friday takes place on Friday, October 20. As we do each year, everyone will wear a shirt honouring our dear friend and others who’ve lost the battle to cancer. We also stand by those who are still fighting. We can’t let cancer win,” she said.

She added that her mom was also a breast cancer survivor who had passed on from a stroke.

“We all know someone or have someone close to us, whether a friend, colleague or family member, who’s affected by cancer. We also would like to encourage other learning centres to follow suit and post pictures on social media,” she said.
