Xaba and Mashele cruise to Boxer Run victory

Glenrose Xaba and Precious Mashele showcased their remarkable speed at the inaugural Boxer Super Run.

GLENROSE Xaba and Precious Mashele showcased their remarkable speed at the inaugural Boxer Super Run in Durban on Sunday, becoming the fastest South Africans to complete a 5km run on home soil with their astonishing finishing times of 13:44 and 16:03, respectively.

The duo are both members of the Boxer Athletics Club.

According to Mashele, every time that he runs, he is thinking about breaking records.

“I always wanted to run a national record. The guys were pushing the pace today. When they dropped the pace, I picked it up, but no one responded to me. I’m happy, and I think my training is going well. I want to thank all those who stood behind me and my training partner. This motivates me so that I can win again. I am happy to win a 5km because it’s not my distance. I would like to be back next year.”

Kabelo Mulaudzi came in second while Nkosinathi Sibiya finished third.

Xaba echoed similar sentiments saying she, too, would be back next year.

“I came here to run well. I did not have a good race at the World Champs, so I came to do my best and aimed to run the SA record. I managed to keep my pace well, and I’m very happy. I’d like to thank my fellow athletes – they ran an incredible race. Well done to Cacisile (Sosibo) who performed very well. I’m very happy for her as she is one of the future stars. I’ll definitely be back next year.”

Cacisile Sosibo came in second while Regina Ndungu finished third.

Michael Meyer, managing director of Stillwater Sports extended his thanks to all the participants, supporters and sponsors who made this event a resounding success.

“We were privileged to witness elite athletes, rising stars, and passionate runners of all ages and backgrounds giving their absolute best for 5km. A massive congratulations to Precious Mashele and Glenrose Xaba for their fantastic performances in the Elite Men’s and Women’s Waves respectively. You’ve given SA’s up-and-coming stars something to aspire to,” he said.
