Burst pipe causes Rosary Road collapse

The road collapse has also affected sections of the kerb and surface along the road in Greenwood Park.

WARD 34 councillor Bobby Maharajh said he believes ageing infrastructure is at the heart of a road collapse that happened on Rosary Road last week.

A burst pipe caused a section of the road near the intersection of Tenby Place to collapse in the Greenwood Park area.

A motorist was lucky to escape injury after his vehicle ended up in the hole on the day of the collapse.

Maharajh believes the old asbestos pipes, many of them more than 30 years old, need to be replaced in order to prevent any significant damage to properties and road infrastructure.

“The issue with a pipeline that is ageing is that when the pipe is fixed and a join is fitted, water pressure will often cause other weaker sections of the pipeline to burst. On this particular pipe, I noticed a number of cracks that seemingly built up over time.

“The area around the collapse was cordoned off while municipal workers attended to the leak, and a TLB was called in to help backfill the road.

“As a result of the collapse, just a few metres away, I noticed a portion of the kerb had sunken in, which does concern me. It is at the point where the tar meets the kerb that has lifted and sunken. The ageing infrastructure problem is not unique to Ward 34, however, I do feel the solution is to replace the entire pipeline. The possibility of another burst is always there, and that is something that concerns me,” he said
