Mount Edgecombe artist celebrates a life of love

Through her motivation and teaching, Mounter has helped young artists find their footing. She has taught aspiring artists to believe in their talent and taught them how to exhibit their work.

LIFE is all about celebrating accomplishments for Pat Mounter of Mount Edgecombe, and turning 90 meant she had to pull out all the stops.

The talented artist celebrated her milestone with family and friends at her home last Thursday and says she can’t wait for her next birthday.

“I hope I get to live to 100 years old, but first let me aim for 91,” she said with a chuckle.

Mounter was born on September 21, 1933 and lived in Johannesburg before moving to Durban in 1993.

She and her husband, Malcolm, moved to Mount Edgecombe after he retired as a pilot. Malcolm also turned 90 in April, and the couple have been married since 1959.

“My career was in admin, but when we moved to Durban, I retired and became more involved with sport and art,” she said.

Mounter loves golf, hockey, cricket, softball and badminton. She was a provincial hockey player, but art is her true passion.

“I love painting and was one of the founders of ArtGivers which raised funds for the SPCA through art sales every year. I have never bought a birthday or Christmas card. I always make them,” she said.

“I also started a trust at the Siphosethu School for children’s uniforms and taught them how to paint. Church and giving where it is needed has also played a major role in my life. It makes me feel good to help those in need. It’s fulfilling for me,” she said.

About 13 years ago, Mounter was diagnosed with cancer.

The lumps were removed, and she has been in remission ever since.

“Early detection saved my life. I live an active and healthy life, so that also helps me stay fit,” she said.
When asked what she is most grateful for, Mounter did not hesitate in saying that it’s the love she is surrounded by.

“I have lots of love around me, and that always shines through on my birthday, which I love celebrating. It’s because of all this love and warmth that I look forward to each new year,” she said.
