Umgeni Park couple hope to grow sport of badminton

Trevor and Nadene Stone, who represent Berea Vets Badminton Club, are advocates for the game and still play competitive badminton.

FOR more than two decades, Umgeni Park couple Trevor and Nadene Stone have excelled in the sport of badminton.

The duo, who represent Berea Vets Badminton Club, are advocates for the game and still play competitive badminton.

In the mixed pairs categories, they’ve won multiple titles in the various age groups, including veterans, masters, grandmasters, silver eagles, golden eagles and diamond eagles (70 and above) titles.

Earlier this year, they won the national mixed pairs title at the Inter-Provincial Tournament (IPT).

“I think people have a misconception that badminton is slow. It is incredibly fast, and because Nadene and I actively played for so long, it really does keep us fit. What we’ve seen in recent years, and this is across the various badminton clubs, is the numbers are waning. We’d like to arrest that trend and get more people involved. I’ve always loved racquet sports and played tennis and squash, but by far, the most strenuous has been badminton. We are making an appeal to residents who have some intermediate experience to join our club and come down and play with Berea Vets. It is an easy sport to pick up once you know how to play,” he said.

For Nadene, her badminton journey started at the age of 16.

“Trevor actually started playing badminton after we met. We started out in East London, but now we’ve been playing together for more than two decades. I do agree with Trevor that playing badminton has kept us fit. One of the positives of our club is there is such a lovely vibe and the camaraderie is wonderful. Ultimately, we would love to see more people join our club,” she said.

If you would like to join or find out more about the badminton club and to discuss times and venues, contact Trevor on WhatsApp on 082 786 3755.
