The 5km walk, which is open to everyone, is being organised by CMH Volvo Cars uMhlanga.

IN an effort to raise breast cancer awareness and help support non-profit organisation (NPO), Gearing for Life, an uMhlanga car dealership will be hosting a 5km Breast Cancer Walk on Sunday, October 1.

The walk, which is open to everyone, is being organised by CMH Volvo Cars uMhlanga.

Founder of the Gearing of Life and four time Cancer survivor, Chantal Oosthuizen, said she hopes to use the event to spread the word on her

“I started the NPO this year in the hopes of helping oncology patients in the government sector. Ultimately my goal is to provide transport, food parcels and any support to patients. The most incredible thing is that all proceeds will be going to patients that are going for chemotherapy that cannot afford private treatment. I’m so happy to have the backing of Volvo because this empowering event isn’t just a walk – it’s a step towards making a difference in other people’s lives. I hope residents bring their family and friends and join us on the day,” she said.

Oosthuisen added that entrants are encouraged to wear pink.

Customer relationship manager at the dealership, Lisa-Marie Pistorius echoed Oosthuizen’s thoughts on the inaugural event.

“Knowing that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month was significant for us. We hope to use the walk to not only educate women about the disease, but also support the incredible work of Gearing for Life. We are nervously excited but we hope to make this an annual event on the walking calendar. It really is about having fun for a good cause and giving back in a meaningful way,” she said.

She added the walk has the full backing of Metro Police, who will be in attendance.
