Reservoir changeover implemented to improve north Durban water supply

The City says water tankers will continue to supply residents until the system fully recovers.

AS the water crisis in North Durban stretches into its sixth day, the eThekwini Municipality has begun supplying various areas from a different reservoir at uMngeni-uThukela Water’s Durban Heights Waterworks.

On Saturday, the City said it suspected vandalism and sabotage were behind the water outage that has affected thousands of residents across four wards.

City spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the decision to change reservoirs was intended to bypass the section of the Northern Aqueduct suspected to have the restriction, which has not been identified.

“The changeover to the new reservoir was completed about three hours ago, and the municipality is now monitoring the impact of this change. This follows a meeting held this morning with our bulk water supplier, uMngeni-uThukela Water, to implement alternative supply options. Our technical teams are continuously monitoring reservoirs to determine if there will be any improvements to the supply of water to uMhlanga, Durban North and surrounding areas,” she said.

Sisilana added that the water flow will be monitored throughout the evening.

“Residents are therefore requested to please use water sparingly to prevent reservoirs from running empty as this may prolong the recovery period. Municipal officials are also continuously updating ward councillors in the affected areas and informing them of all planned interventions to improve the situation,” she said.

Water tankers will continue to supply residents until the system fully recovers.
