#BokFriday: Former Springbok Women’s player gives us her predictions

Karthy Dludla backs the Boks to bring home the Rugby World Cup trophy.

THE 10th men’s Rugby World Cup is well underway with South Africa already securing two wins against Scotland and Romania.

In the lead-up to the global spectacle, Northglen News will be interviewing rugby coaches, former Boks and fans of the game about their expectations and love for the game.

This week, we feature Our Lady of Fatima educator, current Sharks women’s rugby team player and former Springbok women’s player, Karthy Dludla.

What is your earliest Rugby World Cup memory?

“For me, it would be the 2019 Rugby World Cup. I do remember the 1995 and 2003 World Cup triumphs, but I was still young in my rugby career at that point. With the 2019 tournament, I followed it from beginning to end.”

What is you favourite Rugby World Cup memory?

“With the 2019 Rugby World Cup being the freshest memory, it would be no surprise that my favourite memory was seeing Siya Kolisi lift the Webb Ellis Cup. It was the most beautiful thing to watch, and I was surrounded by fellow South Africans which made that moment even sweeter. It was emotional and uplifting all at the same time.”

Who do you think is going to win this year?

“I think it’s going to be tough. I think it will be between New Zealand and the Springboks. Having said that, I do feel South Africa possesses the best make-up in terms of team personnel. There’s a great mixture of youth and experience which will stand the team in good stead.”

Where is the best spot to watch a Springbok game?

“I like to be around people. I would say Boktown, or my spot is College Rovers. At least when you are around friends you have accomplices to help you argue with the referee’s decision when it goes against you.”

What is the best snack to eat when watching a Springbok game?

“Chicken strips and chips and of course, biltong.”

How many rugby jerseys do you currently own?

“I own nine jerseys, and that’s not counting my Sharks jerseys from the past decade.”

How many times were you capped as a Springbok?

“I’ve been capped seven times for the women’s team, and I stepped away from the national scene at the end of last year. I’ve been lucky to have played against Spain, Italy, England, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Madagascar.”
