The 80m-long whalebone pier which was opened in 2007 by the then eThekwini mayor, Logie Naidoo,is undergoing a refurbishment. Work is expected ti be complete by November, in time for the festive season.

UMHLANGA residents and local and international tourists will have to put their ‘Leonardo di Caprio, Kate Winslet (Titanic)’ poses on ice for a while as the iconic whalebone pier is undergoing a refreshing upgrade.

The good news, though, is that the pier will only be off bounds for another month or so while the renovation takes place. In the meantime, those who frequent the beach are asked to remain patient while the beauty receives some tender, loving care.

Speaking to Northglen News, Ward 35 councillor Nicole Bollman said the City had noted that the structure had started becoming compromised and that quick action was needed.

“The contractor set up and started work at the beginning of September. The completion date is scheduled for November this year,” said Bollman.

“This remarkable transformation will rejuvenate this iconic spot and make it even more enchanting than before,” she added.

Over the past few years, the pier has taken quite a beating from natural elements, causing some erosion. This will rectified by applying a chemical concrete additive which will ensure a solid foundation for future generations.

“The deck and abutment wall are getting a fresh coat of paint, along with much-needed repair work. This makeover will not only add to the pier’s aesthetics but also guarantee a safe, welcoming environment for all visitors,” she added.

The popular whalebone pier in uMhlanga is closed up until November as it undergoes an upgrade and refurbishment. New mosaic, improved lighting and a fresh coat of paint are on the cards for the landmark.

Better lighting fixtures will be installed, and the mosaic that has broken off will be replaced with new tiles.

“This is the first refurbishment that the whale bone pier has received. Other than the pier, there are also plans to refurbish the ablution facilities which the City have confirmed is with its Supply Chain Management Department,” said Bollman.

Chairperson for uMhlanga Tourism Jeannie Sarno welcomed the refurbishment of the pier, stating that it was vital to businesses, residents and tourists to ensure that the much-loved pier is always in pristine condition.

“We are eagerly looking forward to the rejuvenating transformation that the whalebone pier will undergo. Residents are also excited and are waiting in anticipation to see the finished product,” she said.

She added that the new restoration and reinforcements will ensure that the standard of the iconic beauty is kept in pristine condition and will bring the pier extended life for future generations to enjoy.

“Let’s not forget the magical feel that the lights bring on a beautiful evening. We are counting down the days until the end of November when we will be able to see the revived mosaic artwork and a fresh coat paint on the stronger and safer pier, just in time for our festive season,” said Sarno.
