Fraudsters nabbed in uMhlanga following phony store purchase

Bank forensics investigators are assisting Durban North SAPS with investigations after four men made a fraudulent purchase at a liquor store.

FOUR people were arrested following a fraudulent purchase from a liquor store in uMhlanga yesterday afternoon.

Marshall Security’s Emergency Dispatch Centre received a report of the incident and that the suspects, driving a grey Suzuki Dzire, were on the run.

Armed response officers and members of Marshall’s special operations team, together with Durban North SAPS, stopped the suspects on the M4 Ruth First Highway where they were apprehended.

“A substantial amount of cash, alcohol and compromised bank cards, possibly linked to the fraudulent activities, were found. All four suspects were transported to Durban North SAPS for further investigation and processing,” said Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell.

It was established that the suspects posed as bank employees and tricked individuals into divulging their security details.

“With unauthorised access to victims’ [cell]phone banking, they made fund transfers into fraudulent bank accounts. The cash was then used to make various purchases until the bank’s red flags were raised,” said Powell.

He strongly advised the public to remain vigilant, guard their personal information and promptly report any suspicious activity.
