uMhlanga ratepayers’ raise service delivery concerns at meeting

The meeting was led by eThekwini mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda and eThekwini speaker Councillor Thabani Nyawose at the Moses Mabhida Stadium last Thursday.

CONCERNS over noise pollution, repairs to sewerage infrastructure and by-law infringements were just some of the issues raised by uMhlanga Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association (URRA) at a recent meeting with the eThekwini Municipality.

The meeting to address service-delivery issues was led by eThekwini mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda and eThekwini speaker Councillor Thabani Nyawose at the Moses Mabhida Stadium last Thursday.

uMhlanga resident and chairperson of the URRA, Terri MacLarty, said the engagement was a ‘positive one’ with various issues thrashed out with the City.

She was joined by the URRA executive committee and Ward 35 councillor Nicole Bollman.

“Overall, we were happy with the City’s commitment to address our concerns, and there were a number of positives. We want to work with them on the various service-delivery issues plaguing residents within the ward. One of our challenges is retail outlets that are operating outside regulated hours. This results in noise pollution and crime and contravention of the City’s by-laws.

“We also discussed repairs to the sewerage infrastructure network affecting many of the substations and, in particular, the Ohlange Wastewater Pump Station. We were told the City has allocated funds to minimise any potential damage to the environment, our beaches and, importantly, the tourism industry. We also discussed the issues of the informal taxi rank on the M4 as well as the construction of the public transport facility for buses and taxis around the uMhlanga Oceans Mall. We are aware that taxis are an important mode of transport for workers, but we request that they must operate within the confines of the law,” she said.

MacLarty thanked the leadership of the City for creating a conducive space to discuss issues that are troubling ratepayers.

“As the leadership of the URRA, we are encouraged by the responses provided by the City, and we are looking forward to working together to ensure that the resolutions taken from the meeting are implemented,” she said.
