Glenashley community tackle problem spot with clean-up

The clean-up, driven by the community, also involved workers from Adopt A Beach, who usually focus their attention on Glenashley Beach.

INCA Drive in Glenashley was the site of a much-needed clean-up as businesses and residents got stuck in to tackle litter and overgrowth over the weekend.

The clean-up, driven by the community, also involved workers from Adopt A Beach, who usually focus their attention on Glenashley Beach.

Janet Simpkins, founder of the Adopt A Beach initiative, said the idea was to move a little inland for the clean-up on Sunday.

“We got in touch with some local businesses and put out a call to the community for this clean-up. The community had grown tired of the litter problem, as well as the bushes being overgrown, and wanted to clean the area of waste and restore a green community space. Instead of our Adopt A Beach being actually at the beach, we’ve been up at the corner near the M4 to help with this particular clean-up. The support was great, and we even had the Parks Department come out and collect the bags of litter as well as some of the brush the volunteers cleared,” she said.

Simpkins also thanked learners from Reddam House Umhlanga who assisted in the clean-up and thanked the sponsors for providing refreshments on the day.

For local resident Richard Brown, the project was a long time coming.

“I drive by Inca Drive on a daily basis to go to Glenashley Beach, and the state of this green space was horrible. The idea now is to keep coming back to this space to clean it up even more, and there is talk with a local business about potentially making the area an Adopt-a-Spot. The support from the residents has been great, and the amount of bush we cleared and the bags of litter we collected was staggering. I think this particular spot between Inca Drive and the M4 is a thoroughfare so people often discard rubbish here. We want to stop that and just have this green space looking neat and tidy,” he said.
