Firwood Road house robbery leads to shoot-out

The armed suspects made off with several items, including the homeowner’s vehicle.

A MARSHALL Security armed security officer escaped serious injury after he was involved in a shoot-out on Firwood Road in Avoca on Friday morning.

“The officer was responding to a house robbery just after 07:40 when he came under fire,” explained the company spokesperson, Tyron Powell.

“They began firing shots towards our officer, and in self-defence, the officer returned fire. During this exchange, our officer lost control of his vehicle, causing it to roll down an embankment. Due to him losing control of his vehicle amid the gunfire, the vehicle, unfortunately, crashed, providing the suspects with an opportunity to flee.

“They managed to take various household items, including the homeowner’s vehicle, a Mercedes Benz. Multiple spent cartridges were discovered at the scene, further contributing to the ongoing investigation. The armed response officer’s condition is stable, and he has been transported to hospital by Netcare 911,” he said.

Powell added that the stolen Mercedes Benz was later recovered abandoned in the Greenwood Park area.

“The suspects’ vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, was recovered just after 10:00 in Ntuzuma, north of uMhlanga, thanks to the combined efforts of the Marshall Special Operations Team and SAPS KwaMashu Trio Crimes Unit. This Corolla was stolen during a Verulam house robbery earlier in the week,” he said.
