A DEAD juvenile Humpback Whale washed up on uMhlanga Beach on Tuesday evening.
The whale, which is in a state of decomposition, initially washed up near Durban View Park Beach just after 19:00.
According to Dewet Geldenhuys, the uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) precinct manager, the eThekwini Municipality and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife had been notified about the incident.
“The whale initially washed up at Durban View Park, and the tide then took the carcass farther north near the uMhlanga Lighthouse where it currently is. The Parks Department have been notified and are in the process of getting in a grader to remove the carcass. They will probably remove the carcass in sections using skips,” he said.
Ward councillor Nicole Bollman said she, too, had spoken with the municipality.
“I have spoken with the manager of Parks, and they have confirmed they are aware of the situation and are currently working on finalising various processes necessary to uplift and remove the whale carcass,” she said.
It is unclear what led to the whale washing up, however, Humpback Whales migrate along the east coast of the province between June and November.
The last time a Humpback Whale washed up on uMhlanga Beach was in 2019.
