Pickleball players play like pros in Durban North

Pickleball is a sport that combines the elements of tennis, squash, badminton and table tennis.

DURBAN North Tennis Club (DNTC) held its first pickleball tournament recently, about six months after the sport was first introduced to the club.

“The DNTC Pickleball Tournament was a huge success. Participants, families and friends all joined to enjoy some action-packed pickleball. It’s amazing to see this sport growing as it is so accessible to everyone,” said the club’s PRO Matt Brackenbury.

He said the tournament was organised alongside Pickleball Africa in a short amount of time.

“Our pickleball community is growing extremely quickly, so we had a lot of regulars asking for a tournament. We are so thankful to all of our sponsors who really came through and helped us out with awesome gifts, vouchers and prize money,” he added.

He said the DNTC will be challenging Cowies Hill Tennis Club to a competitive tournament later this year.

If you would like to learn how to play the sport, join the DNTC every Saturday from 09:00 to 11:00. The cost is R50 per session. To book your spot, WhatsApp Brackenbury on 073 988 3955.

What is pickleball?

The fun sport combines the elements of tennis, squash, badminton and table tennis.

All you need is a tennis court divided into four, a pickle ball which is similar to a wiffle ball, and paddle rackets. It’s fun for the entire family and a great way to keep fit.

Some of the other benefits include improving hand-eye co-ordination, agility and muscle strength and function.

The rules are also pretty straightforward and not hard to learn. The ball is hit back and forth over the net until a player makes an error. Points are scored only by the serving team. Each game goes to 11 points, but you must win by two points.
