Team up and tidy up Kenville and Sea Cow Lake

Gloves, bin bags and refreshments will be supplied at the clean-up, however, residents are encouraged to carry along spades, rakes or tools to make cleaning up easier.

A GROUP of like-minded individuals who want to see upliftment in Kenville and Sea Cow Lake have joined forces to initiate a major clean-up for the areas, and they’re hoping that all residents attend or support the event in some way.

Speaking to Northglen News, Anil Beekrum, chairperson for Kenville and Sea Cow Lake Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association, said the initiative is the joint effort of the forum and Green Buddies Environment Club with the assistance of various sponsors.

“The area is in need of a massive clean-up. Kenville and Sea Cow Lake are expansive in size, and they both are comprised of informal settlements, too. There’s only one settlement that has a skip from which garbage is collected once a week,” he said.

He said the areas would take more than one weekend to clean up – that this was just a start and that a more long-term solution was needed to keep the area tidy.

“Ideally, every informal settlement should be given a skip for garbage so that it’s not disposed of on the roadside. Educational campaigns are also needed in these areas, which we as an association will keep pushing for,” he added.

In the meantime, he urged residents and ratepayers to attend the clean-up, which starts at Vijay Terrace Grounds at 8:30 sharp.

“We would like people to help tidy up and also tell us which spots require attention. The turnout at meetings is very poor, so residents can also use this as a chance to get to know more about the association, as well,” said Beekrum.

Kishorie Dubaree, vice-chair for the association, said that apart from cleaning up, there will also be fun activities, such as a five-a-side soccer tournament and a flea market.

“The cost per team is R50 and R200 to book a stall. We urge the community to come out in numbers and get involved in the clean-up in some way and give our suburbs the much-needed pride that they deserve,” she said.

Ashlin Ellan, chairperson of Green Buddies Environmental Club and the CPF Youth Desk, said there’s lots planned for the day, and community participation is encouraged.

“Our aim is to clean as many roads as possible in the community up to Kenville Road. Anyone can join in and help make a difference in the community,” he said.

“We have a clean-up followed by an environmental education programme, a family fun day and a street soccer tournament as a fundraiser for environmental projects in the community. We want to bring people together. The CPF Youth Desk will also be engaging with youth to look at social crime-prevention strategies,” he added.
