Residents, businesses call for urgent Sea Cow Lake Road rehabilitation

The road is a major arterial route serving thousands of motorists and residents on a daily basis.

BUSINESS owners and residents have voiced their frustration over the steady deterioration of the surface of Sea Cow Lake Road.

The road surface, which is riddled with potholes, had been first affected by a sewage leak which caused damage to the section of road between the railway bridge and Enforce Business Park.

Ward 34 Councillor Bobby Maharajh said the situation is worsening by the day.

“After escalating the matter the sewage leak was eventually fixed. However, now the attention has shifted to the road surface. The road needs to be rehabilitated and resurfaced as the flowing wastewater has eaten away at the tar leaving the road riddle with potholes. The situation now is worsening by the day due to the high volume of traffic.

“It must be understood that this road is used by residents of Sea Cow Lake, Kenville and those travelling from Inanda, Newlands and KwaMashu. I understand the City is busy with the widening of Sea Cow Lake Road which is a separate project, however, this road requires urgent attention,” Maharajh said.

Business owner and local resident, Warren Wareing said the road condition had also led to some motorists driving into the oncoming lane to avoid the traffic.

“The road needs to be asphalted. While there isn’t sewage flowing on the road, the road surface is now a massive problem. The uneven and dangerous surface slows traffic down and motorists are sometimes forced to drive into the oncoming lane to avoid driving into a pothole,” he said.
