Kwaya youth choir to perform in La Lucia

The KZN Youth Kwaya will first perform in La Lucia before moving on to uMhlanga later in the year.

THE KZN Youth Kwaya will be sharing the stage with students from Crawford International La Lucia, Preparatory and College on Friday, July 28 at 18:00.

The choir is a provincial choir in South Africa made up of a diverse group of around 60 choristers, conducted by Bernard Krüger, a conductor, composer and accomplished musician.

Speaking to Northglen News ahead of the event, he said the choir’s repertoire mirrors South Africa’s cultural diversity and includes a range of classical (sacred and secular), pop choral and traditional African music.

It is the oldest youth choir in South Africa, which was founded in 1967 by Hein de Villiers and has been open to the youth of KZN for over 50 years.

“Our choristers come from the greater Durban and surrounding areas, as well as from farther along the KZN north and south coasts,” he added.

The choir has a very entertaining and appealing repertoire, which includes songs by Taylor Swift, Disney, some beautiful choral pieces and traditional South African songs.
“Through this event, we want to inspire the musicians and musical youth from Durban North to get involved in music performance. We also want to showcase the enormous depth of talent we have, not only in our city but in our province as a whole,” said Krüger.

Since the KZN Youth Kwaya is a non-profit organisation, funds raised from this event will be used to offer funding to talented singers who cannot afford to join, as well as contribute to the immense cost of touring and participation in large festivals and international events.

The choir will perform at a music festival in Ballito on August 12 and in uMhlanga on September 15.

The event at Crawford starts at 18:00, and tickets are R100 per person through Quicket.
