Greenwood Park community rally around fundraiser and clean-up

The fundraiser will also be a way to raise funds for Greenwood Park Primary School.

THERE will be plenty to celebrate this Saturday as plans for a multi-faceted clean-up around Greenwood Park this weekend get underway.

Spearheaded by Greenwood Park Primary School, the community clean-up on Saturday, July 22 (08:30 to 12:00) will also see a fundraising fun day which includes a 5-a-side football tournament and a community market at the school grounds in Park Station Road.

The initiative aims to unite the community towards a common goal of maintaining a clean environment and fostering camaraderie among residents.

The fundraiser will also be a way to raise funds for Greenwood Park Primary School.

Cheneé Green of DC Footstars Elite Girls’ Training said the five-a-side tournament is all about inclusivity.

“When the idea was proposed, we thought about bringing the community together through sport. Kids love all types of sport, and football is one of the more popular sports. We want the community to come out and have some fun and just enjoy the day. The tournament is open to girls and boys as well as mixed teams. In that way, it is an inclusive event. The fee to join is R20 per player, and all proceeds from the day go towards the school,” Green explained.

Nevanna Burton, who runs the monthly Greenwood Park Lifestyle Market, will also be helping out by hosting a market at the school.

“I think Cheneé summed it up perfectly. This is a community event, and as much as we want to give traders a boost, we also want to help the school. We will have a variety of traders, from food stalls to thrift, among others. We hope everyone sees this as a way for us to unite as a community for a common goal and purpose,” she said.
