Chefs cook up a soup storm in uMhlanga on Mandela Day

About 20 chefs from Durban came together to cook 500 litres of soup for Mandela Day.

ABOUT 500 litres of delicious vegetable soup was made by chefs from Chefs with Compassion at Breakers Resort in uMhlanga this morning.

Chefs from different operations – culinary schools, restaurants, and catering operations – came together, in the spirit of ubuntu, honouring Madiba’s legacy on the occasion of the 10-year remembrance of his passing, to cook for food-vulnerable communities across the city.

“There are about 20 chefs in the kitchen today, each working up their culinary magic to feed the hungry. Various businesses, cooking schools and restaurants have made this initiative possible by sponsoring ingredients, which we are so grateful for,” said Danielle Venter, chairperson for the SA Chefs Association, KZN.

The beneficiary was SA Harvest, an organisation committed to ending hunger and reducing food waste.

Lindsay Hopkins, sustainability manager for SA Harvest, said the soup will be distributed across Durban.

“There are various old-age homes, orphanages and some homeless shelters and early childhood development centres who will receive a hot, fresh meal from this act of kindness today,” she said.

Hopkins thanked all stakeholders involved in making this initiative possible.

This initiative forms part of Chefs with Compassion’s nationwide #67000litres campaign.
