Greenwood Park to host community clean-up

The clean-up initiative aims to unite the community towards a common goal of keeping the area clean and restoring civic pride.

IN a bid to restore civic pride, several role-players in the Greenwood Park community have come together to clean up various roads in the area.

Spearheaded by Greenwood Park Primary School, the community clean-up on Saturday, July 22 (08:30 to 12:00) will also see a fundraising fun day which includes a 5-a-side football tournament and a market at the school grounds in Park Station Road.

One of the community organisers behind the event, Farrah Shaik, said the initiative will concentrate on the three main entrances and roads leading into the area, including Mimosa Road, Effingham Road and Ardrossan Road.

“In 2020, the community of Greenwood Park rallied together and hosted a huge clean-up across the area, which was a rather successful initiative. We hope to replicate that success this year by targeting key areas where litter has piled up and, in some instances, where we’ve seen illegal dumping. Greenwood Park Primary School approached my team to help organise this event as a way of teaching their learners about community participation and the importance of civic pride. Once again, we are delighted to be partnering with municipal bodies, Cleansing and Solid Waste, as well as Parks Durban North.”

“There are a host of activities on the day, including an U13 football tournament and a community market. We also have the support of a local landscaping company that is planning on installing a community garden near the railway bridge on Mimosa Road. I think this is a much-needed project to help beautify and regenerate the area and hopefully inspire similar projects throughout the area,” she said.

Shaik said they welcome any support from residents, businesses, sports clubs and religious organisations. The success of this event hinges on the residents’ active participation and engagement.

“Already several role-players have come on board to help out. On the day, we will have a registration table at Greenwood Park Primary School where those participating will receive bin bags and gloves. We also urge residents, where possible, to bring their own gloves, brooms, rakes and grass cutters. We will then split up teams to go to various locations for the clean-up,” she said.

Shaik added that the initiative aims to unite the community towards a common goal of maintaining a clean environment and fostering camaraderie among residents.

The fundraiser will also be a way to raise funds for Greenwood Park Primary School.
