Flooding and damage to roads around Durban – sinkhole in Glen Hills

EMERGENCY disaster teams are working to support affected communities following heavy rains that caused flooding and damage to several roads in and around Durban on Tuesday.

Heavy rainfall followed by strong winds has caused significant damage in various parts of the province, with Inanda Township, north of Durban, being the most severely affected area.

In Glen Hills in Durban North, heavy rains caused a sinkhole to develop at the intersection of Rinaldo Road and Harrison Drive.

Metro Police have urged motorists to be vigilant as they navigate roads due to debris and, in some places, mud on the roads.

According to eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Lindiwe Khuzwayo, in some parts of Durban, there has been damage to homes, with clinics flooded and water pipes damaged.

“Reports have been received of a herdsman who was washed away by a river in Zwelisha, west of Durban. Teams have been deployed to communities affected by the heavy rains to open halls to accommodate displaced families and to render other assistance such as food, blankets and mattresses. Halls have been opened in Folweni, Amoati, Amatikwe, Redfern in Phoenix and Inanda Newtown C,” she said. 

Meanwhile, after yesterday’s tornado in Inanda, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs said disaster management teams are actively on the ground, collecting all the necessary data.
