Durban to host International Day of Yoga event

The yoga event will be followed by various cultural performances.

THE Consulate General of India, Durban, in partnership with the eThekweni Municipality, is hosting an International Day of Yoga event on Wednesday, June 21, at People’s Park at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The yoga event, which begins at 08:30 for 09:00 and ends at 12:30, will be followed by a cultural performance, including an Indian classical performance and Zulu dance performed by the local South African community.

There is added significance as this year also marks 30 years of diplomatic relations between India and South Africa.

In a statement, the consulate said the International Day of Yoga (IDY) is celebrated annually on June 21 and emphasises the significance of promoting yoga to improve health, well-being and build a more peaceful and harmonious world.

The day also serves as an opportunity for people to come together and experience the transformative power of yoga.

This year’s event is under the theme ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakan’ – a celebration of India’s gift to humanity – with the ‘public partnership’ or ‘Jan Bhaagidari’ approach of mobilising communities across the globe to come together.

An estimated 250 million people are due to participate worldwide.
