Hundreds celebrate International Yoga Day in Durban

The event saw people of all ages and backgrounds participate in various yoga sessions across Durban.

RESIDENTS from around Durban joined KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube and Deputy Minister of Health Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo to celebrate the ninth International Day of Yoga on Sunday, June 18.

The event saw people of all ages and backgrounds participate in various yoga sessions across Durban.

One of those events was hosted by the Sivananda World Peace Foundation at the Amphitheatre.

The commemorative event is aimed at promoting health and mental well-being and also involved the KwaZulu-Natal government, Department of Health and the eThekwini Municipality.

KZN premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube said the event also offered the chance for people to learn more about the health benefits of yoga and how to incorporate it into a daily routine.

“The International Day of Yoga was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. It was an opportunity for people from all over the world to come together and practise yoga, a mind-body practice that originated in India. Yoga has been shown to have numerous benefits for physical and mental health, including reducing stress, improving flexibility and increasing strength and balance,” Dube-Ncube said.
