Sip coffee and connect with Durban North organisation

Aboud welcomes enquiries from anyone who would like to attend one of the Coffee-Connect mornings to hear more about how they could be involved in what Domino does.

JOINING forces and sharing ideas is becoming more and more popular within the landscape of non-profit and non-government organisations.

The reason for this – funding is at an all-time low for some organisations who now have to find ways to become self-sustainable, and, who better to learn from than each other?

This was recently discussed at The Domino Foundation’s Coffee-Connect morning, held at the premises in Durban North recently, where Domino shared resourceful information with the team from the Durban Association For the Aged (DAFTA).

These sessions, called Coffee Connect, are the brainchild of Nadia Aboud, a self-confessed coffee groupie who loves getting people together to connect.

“It’s a great time to talk and share and hear people’s hearts. It’s my mission to facilitate community connection and communication around the foundation’s seven programmes, to spark creative thinking about volunteer and corporate involvement in impacting the thousands of lives Domino touches each day,” she said.

DAFTA learnt about The Domino Foundation and the strategies implemented, the relationships and partnerships formed and the likelihood of becoming self-sustainable.

Cheryl Naidoo, manager for DAFTA, said the organisation assisted the elderly all over Durban with meals, social programmes, skills development and more at various venues throughout the city.

“DAFTA has been in existence since 1970. We render social work services to the elderly throughout Durban, including provision of senior citizens’ clubs for the aged and service centres which essentially are daycare facilities that promote social and recreational and other stimulating activities,” she said.

Recently, the association lost its funding from government so it has had to adapt and learn new ways to generate an income to keep its programmes in operation.

After downing a delicious cup of coffee and devouring tasty treats made by the Domino’s Red Light anti-human-trafficking programme, The Domino Foundation team and DAFTA agreed to set up another meeting to discuss the opportunities available to them.
