City warns of circulation of old water-rationing schedule

The City said it has done away with water rationing, and therefore, the current schedule being circulated is false.

THE eThekwini Municipality has urged residents to be aware of an old water-rationing schedule being circulated on various WhatsApp groups.

City spokesperson Lindiwe Khuzwayo said the schedule, purporting to be in operation currently, is from last year.

“Residents are informed that the water-rationing schedule being shared on various groups is no longer applicable in the City. Water rationing was implemented by the municipality in June last year following reduced water supply at the Durban Heights Water Treatment Plant after the April floods,” she said.

Khuzwayo added that the City has since done away with water rationing, and therefore, the current schedule being circulated is false.

Ward 35 councillor Nicole Bollman said she had fielded several queries from residents about the water rationing.

“Residents were sending a PDF document regarding a water-rationing schedule. I can confirm that it is an old document that was published in June 2022 post the April and May floods due to water-supply issues we were then experiencing because Umgeni Water’s aqueducts 1 and 2 had been destroyed in the floods. Although some areas have had to battle with interrupted supply since then, here in Ward 35, we stabilised quite quickly in 2022, with this schedule not having much impact on us,” she said.
