Foot chase leads to arrest of copper thief in Glen Hills

The suspect is linked to two other crimes in the north Durban area.

A SUSPECT, who was in the process of stealing copper pipes from a Glen Hills home, was arrested on Thursday afternoon.

Marshall Security, assisted by the SAPS Durban K9 Unit, apprehended the suspect who has also been linked to another business break-in in the area.

According to Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell, the suspect was spotted in a property on Candytuft Grove.

“The suspect was spotted by our response officers, and a foot chase ensued. The suspect attempted to evade arrest by fence-hopping from property to property. Our officers were quickly joined by the SAPS Durban K9 Unit, who were also patrolling the area.

“The suspect was eventually apprehended and was found in possession of suspected stolen copper pipes. Additionally, it was discovered that the suspect had threatened a homeowner on Harrison Drive with a knife while he was fence-hopping. The suspect was handed over to the Greenwood Park SAPS and was charged with attempted house robbery and theft,” he said.

According to Powell, the suspect was apprehended in September last year and has also been positively identified on CCTV footage for a business burglary on Chris Hani Road (North Coast Road) in March of this year.
