Repair projects ongoing in uMdloti after last year’s floods

One of the projects undertaken by the municipality and contractors included the installation of two larger diameter pipes from Bellamont Road to uMdloti Beach.

THERE has been significant progress in the repairs in and around the resort town of uMdloti which was significantly impacted by last year’s floods.

Several apartment blocks had to be evacuated due to mudslides which caused utter devastation to the area.

Bellamont Road, in particular, was hit by mudslides with one wash-away leaving a gaping hole between a building complex and a home.

Part of the work undertaken by the municipality and contractors included the installation of two larger diameter pipes from Bellamont Road to uMdloti Beach in order to prevent mudslides that cause severe damage to properties.

They also backfilled the area that was affected by the mudslides.

The project was one of 600 initiated by the municipality since last year to repair and rehabilitate damaged infrastructure.

Vicky Schnetler, uMdloti Smart Village precinct manager, praised the hard work of the community and various stakeholders in helping the resort town bounce back from the devastation.

“The residents of uMdloti were absolutely phenomenal. We helped remove sand from the roads and helped each other where we could to clean up after the two bouts of heavy rains. We’ve made significant progress since the floods. This past Easter weekend was also a successful one for uMdloti as 90% of our Airbnb accommodations were full. I would go on to say this has been the busiest the village has been since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“There are still a few projects outstanding, and there is so much to celebrate in uMdloti as the Smart Village and eThekwini Municipality continue to fix our village one project at a time. A company has been contracted to construct the stormwater channel on the forest side of Bellamont Road. Work has commenced and should be completed by the end of April. This will be followed by kerbing and raising the panhandle entrances before resurfacing the road,” she said.
