Team up with your ‘buddies’ and clean up uMhlanga Beach

The clean-up will not only be educational but will help the tourist hotspot – uMhlanga Beach – that has had a hard time lately.

THE uMhlanga Beach clean-up, hosted by Green Buddies Environmental Club (GBEC), takes place on April 22.

The club’s mandate is not only to tackle pollution hands-on but also to educate and inform the community about the importance of taking care of the environment.

“Ocean pollution is a never-ending global problem. We should anticipate the deposition of plastic waste and debris on our beaches and act upon it before it gets out of control,” said Ashlin Ellan of Green Buddies.

He said the club chose uMhlanga Beach as it’s a tourist hotspot which hasn’t had the best of times recently.

“Seeing that uMhlanga is a central tourist hotspot and has already faced major hardships in recent times, ensuring a spotless beach from a mass beach clean-up will be of great benefit and allow for all Durbanites to take a pride in it,” he said.

The clean-up, which is being supported by the uMhlanga community and learners from various different Durban schools, starts at 10 McCausland Crescent (near Beverley Hills Hotel) on uMhlanga Beach and will move along the coastline.

Ocean Stewards will offer insights into the practice of marine research and conservation, making the clean-up educational and informative.

“The main goal of GBEC is to educate and inform communities and the youth about the importance and value of the environment and to teach them sustainable living practices that they can implement in their daily lives,” he added.

People ‘n Planet, Krispy Kreme and the Zero Waste Foundation have also come on board and pledged to support Green Buddies in this mass beach clean-up.
